President Obama’s threat to single handedly make changes to the nation’s immigration policies is running into strong opposition from the public, including a majority of his own party. According to the most recent IBD/TIPP 73% of the legal population in the US say that president Obama should work with congress on illegal immigration, while a mere 22% say he should sidestep congress and go it alone with an executive order as he has continuously threatened. 78% of Independents have said he needs to work with congress, 54% of Democrats say he should work with congress, and 78% of Republicans demand he work with congress. while a full 80% of those aged 18-24 want him to work with congress. When asked specifically about executive orders to “slow deportation of illegal immigrants by providing them with legal protection and work permits,” 63% of those polled say they re against Obama’s issuing that order, with a strong majority of Republicans and Independents (88%) strongly opposed. Just 34% of the public backs that move, though that includes 60% of Democrats. The poll also found that support for any type of reform has fallen to 48% . It appears as if the recent surge of illegal aliens across the border has shown that an amnesty is only going to attract more illegals crossing the border for the next wave of amnesty. We feel this is why the president has delayed his promise of action by the end of the summer in an effort to lessen the impact and Democrat losses in the midterm elections.
